For example, the manufacturer may require maintenance for the lock after 50,000 cycles, for the handle after 100,000 cycles and for the door hinges after 30,000 cycles. The number of cycles that the door has behind is not recognizable on a manually operated door. This can lead to poorly maintained components and legal problems in liability cases.
The doors installed in a building are used in different ways and, above all, with different frequencies. If all doors of the building are serviced once a year, doors that have only been operated a hundred times are affected as well as doors that are operated a thousand times more often. This leads to unnecessary maintenance on doors that are not operated as well as doors that are defective because they are not maintained enough.
The problems are particularly relevant for safety-relevant functional doors, such as emergency exit, panic and fire protection doors, which are designed as swing doors that can be opened by hand, because the reliable, trouble-free function of the components is safety-relevant for people. To solve the problem, it is proposed to equip these doors with a counter, which counts the opening-closing cycles of the pivoting door leaf compared to the frame rigidly attached to the building, the respective counting impulses being triggered by the pivoting movement of the door leaf relative to the door frame.
By recognizing how often a door has actually been opened, it can be very well estimated whether and when the door components require maintenance and, if necessary, the maintenance - even only of the affected subset of components - in exactly the right time be performed.
In a preferred embodiment, the counter is mounted in a rebate of the door. A fold in this sense is a strip-shaped narrow cavity which, when the door leaf is closed, is delimited both by a surface of the movable door leaf and by a surface of the immovable door frame. The arrangement of the counter in a fold has the advantage that the counter is not visible when the door is closed, that the relative movement of the door leaf with respect to the frame can be used very directly to trigger the counting pulses, and that a single version of a counter for a very large variety of doors can be used, as some rebates are almost the same thickness on all functional doors.
